Acropolis interesting facts

Acropolis, the heart of ancient Athens, is named after the Greek words for “high city.” This UNESCO World Heritage site was used as a defensive stronghold during times of war. In prehistoric times, a site was continuously inhabited, and the evidence of human settlement dates back to the 4th millennium BC.

The Erechtheion was built to house several different religious cults and was considered one of the most significant temples in ancient times. The primary function of the Erechtheion was to provide a sanctuary for the sacred wooden statue of Athena. It features a porch supported by six female statues known as the Caryatids.

The Theatre of Dionysus, dedicated to Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility, is considered the world’s first theater. It is located at the top of the Acropolis and was the birthplace of Greek drama. The theater was built in the 6th century BC, and it had the largest seating capacity of its time. Dionysus’ Theatre could accommodate more than 17000 guests.

The Temple of Athena Nike is a small temple dedicated to the Greek goddess of victory, Athena Nike. The temple is also known by the name Wingless Victory Temple, and its structure was completed in 420 BC. Athens used the temple as a treasury to store funds for military campaigns and public works.

When is the best time to visit

Visiting Athens and Acropolis is possible throughout the year. But the best time to visit is during the seasons of Spring and Autumn. Since Greece has a Mediterranean climate, the temperatures are still comfortable, and the weather is beautiful, making it ideal for sightseeing.

The Summer months are extremely crowded, and the temperatures can rise up to 35°C. If you are in Athens during this period, avoid sightseeing during midday, and opt for early morning or late afternoon. If you’re out of options, make sure you wear sunscreen protection, a hat, and always have a bottle of water with you.

Winter is the low season, and there are almost no crowds. If you don’t mind the cold and wet weather, this is an excellent time to visit museums and enjoy the monuments stress-free.

The best time to visit Acropolis and Athens depends mainly on your own preferences, schedule, and budget. Make sure you check the weather forecast to plan your visit accordingly.

Great time on this Private Acropolis Tour!

We recently booked a private tour of the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum with Loanna. Everything was Outstanding! As a doctor of Archaeology and a certified tour guide of Greece, she was more than qualified to give a tour and was a wealth of information! She shared myths and stories of the gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece. She was a very pleasant and knowledgeable guide. Loanna allowed us to linger where we wanted and patiently answered any questions we had. We would highly recommend this tour for any Greek excursions as she is certified all over the country!
