A professionally guided tour

This Acropolis Museum Tour felt a bit like actual time travel. I have to give credit to our guide, Yorgos, as his storytelling transported us back to ancient Athens. Also, because he knew where the crowds usually gather, we were able to avoid them, giving us a sense of exclusivity. Highly recommend this tour!

The Acropolis Museum left me speechless!

I had a lot of fun and learned so much on this tour. We went to all the floors of the Museum and the sculptures and everything was so amazingly beautiful. The Gallery of the Acropolis Slopes was my favorite. There is so much to see and explore! Just wow! Plus, we saved a lot of time because our guide got us in without waiting in line. Definitely worth booking!

DESCRIPTION

Acropolis Museum Tour

THE NEW ACROPOLIS MUSEUM

Before the new Acropolis Museum was built, there was an old museum situated on the Acropolis Hill. It was small and, as you can imagine, cramped with tourists, leaving little space for its huge collection of artifacts. The new museum, built at the base of Acropolis Hill, was opened to the public in 2009. This impressive and large building is suitable for keeping priceless ancient heritage on display. Follow your tour guide through different sections of the Acropolis Museum. They'll show you the vast and well-organized collections of the most amazing artifacts of antiquity.

IMPRESSIVE COLLECTIONS

This tour will allow you to learn all about the Acropolis Museum's impressive collections! One of them is the 'alabastron' collection. 'Alabastron' is a type of pottery made of alabaster stone, small in size, and artistically decorated. These small vials and vessels were used to hold perfumes or massage oils and were considered luxury items. Amazingly beautiful and crafted by the most skilled craftsmen, these artifacts are a testament to the refined taste and wealth of the ancient Athenians. Another is the coin collection; on display are bronze, copper, silver, and gold coins of different eras. From the Archaic Period to the Byzantine era, during the tour, you will see the most rare and valuable coins in the world!

WHAT IS THE MOST FAMOUS PIECE IN THE ACROPOLIS MUSEUM?

Without a doubt, it is the Parthenon Frieze! Carved in Pentelic marble by the famous sculptor Phidias, it once stood at the top of the Parthenon. Made to celebrate the victory over the Persians at the field of Marathon, it depicts the Panathenaic procession. It was the culmination of an annual festival called Panathenaea. The festival was a celebration of the goddess Athena, the protector of the city.

"STOLEN" ARTIFACTS

As an integral part of this tour, you get to see 40 of the 97 surviving blocks of marble that are on display at the Acropolis Museum. Most of the rest were taken to London at the beginning of the 19th century. Back then, Greece was still governed by the Ottoman Empire, which allowed Lord Elgin, a British diplomat, to remove the sculptures and ship them to England. Greek authorities have been trying for a century to bring the cultural heritage back where it belongs. By taking this tour of the Acropolis Museum, you are a part of this effort!

Acropolis Museum Tour

The Invention of Theater

The Acropolis Museum has different thematic sections, one of which is dedicated to artifacts found at the Theater of Dionysus.

We know from historical accounts that the first dramatic performances took place in the Agora. We also know that the wooden stage built there collapsed, killing several spectators. It was clear that the theater needed its own place. Because dramatic performances were tied to the worship of the god Dionysus, the theater found its place in the Dionysius Sanctuary on the slopes of Acropolis Hill. With time, it came to be known as the Theatre of Dionysus.

Rooted in ritualistic practice, the theater also serves the human need for imitation and storytelling. Once it gained popularity in Athens, it spread all over the Greek world like wildfire. It's not an exaggeration to say that the ancient Greeks were crazy about theater. They weren't the first civilization to think about the human condition, but they were the first to put it on display for an audience. To be precise, it was the Athenians who first built the 'theatron', or 'a place of seeing'.
