We didn’t have to wait in line at all!

The tour includes skip-the-line admission tickets, which I very much appreciate! We visited the Acropolis in June, and it was already super hot! If I had had to wait in line (and it was a long line), I definitely would not have lasted long. This way, we saved so much time and were able to start the tour right away. And a good thing we did - our tour guide Petra taught us so much, I would have hated to miss even a minute.

I literally felt like I was in Ancient Greece

Our guide Christos was so lively and so eloquent! When he talked about the history behind the Acropolis, I imagined myself strolling among the sites. I really wish I could watch a play at the Theater of Dionysus or stroll through the Parthenon in its full glory. You can really feel the weight of history here, partially because of the ruins themselves and partially because our local guide was just that good! This is definitely the best Acropolis tour!

DESCRIPTION

Acropolis Guided Tour

WANDER AROUND THE ACROPOLIS: THE CENTER OF ANCIENT GREEK CIVILIZATION

Your local tour guide will take you to the top of the hill overlooking Athens. There, you’ll explore the Acropolis - an ancient citadel full of cultural monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Discover ancient theaters for both drama and music. For example, the Theater of Dionysus was famous for its plays, while the Odeon of Herodes Atticus was used for musical concerts. Your tour guide will also show you the monumental Propylaia Gates - the ceremonial gateway to the Acropolis. Next, explore the temples. The Erechtheion is famous for its stunning Caryatids - female sculptures that serve as supporting columns. And each one has its own design and personality!

VISIT THE SYMBOL OF ANCIENT GREECE: THE PARTHENON

After visiting Erechtheion, your guide will lead you to the most famous temple of the Acropolis - the Parthenon. This building was constructed for Athena, Athens’ patron goddess, out of gratitude for Ancient Greece’s victory over Persia. As you stand where ancient philosophers and worshippers stood before, listen to your guide recount the building’s history and significance. Because of the building’s devotion to Athena and its symmetric, gorgeous architecture, it became a symbol of democracy and Ancient Greece in general. You’ll understand why just by looking at its beautiful sculptures and imposing columns.

TAKE IN THE PANORAMIC VIEW FROM THE TOP OF THE ACROPOLIS

To complete the Acropolis Guided Tour, your local guide will take you to a lookout point. Since the Acropolis is located on a hill overlooking Athens, you’ll see a panoramic view of Greece’s capital. The modern city makes for a stark contrast next to the ancient ruins - and for a gorgeous picture! Feel free to ask your guide to take some pictures of you and create a lasting souvenir of your Acropolis Guided Tour!

PRO TIP

When you enter the Acropolis, you'll walk through the main gates (the Propylaea). Don't rush straight ahead to stand directly in front of the Parthenon! Stop right after you enter, slightly off to the side. This is actually the best angle because you capture both the front and side of the temple.

There was a statue of the goddess Athena on the Acropolis?

According to ancient sources, there used to be a colossal bronze statue of the goddess Athena standing on the Acropolis. It was called Athena Promachos, which means ‘one who fights on the front lines’. The statue was supposedly built to thank the goddess for helping the Athenians beat the Persians at the Battle of Marathon.

Apparently, the statue was gigantic. The Ancient Greek geographer Pausanias wrote that the top of the statue was visible as far as 60 km away from Athens! The Acropolis has so many cool stories and details you might miss on your own, that’s why Acropolis Private Tour can be a great idea if you want the full experience, with a guide who brings it all to life.

FAQ – Acropolis Guided Tour

Are there toilets inside the Acropolis?

Yes! There’s no need to worry about that. You’ll find three different restroom facilities inside the Acropolis. There’s one next to the Parthenon, some inside the Acropolis Museum, and several by the old, now closed, east Acropolis entrance.

How do I get to the Acropolis?

You can take either the metro or the bus. If traveling on the metro, get on the red line (M2) and head to the Acropolis metro station. The southeast entrance to the Acropolis is then just a 2-minute walk away. If you’re traveling by bus, you can take any line that stops at the Makrigianni station. From there, it’s a 3-minute walk to the main entrance of the Acropolis.

Can I cancel my Acropolis Guided Tour?

Yes, just like the rest of our Acropolis tours, this one comes with flexible booking, so you cancel up to 24 hours in advance and get a full refund.

Can you visit the Acropolis without a tour?

It’s possible to visit the Acropolis without a tour guide. If you want to explore it at your own pace, we suggest booking an Acropolis ticket with audio guide.

What should I do after the Acropolis Guided Tour?

And the best way to that is by booking the Acropolis Combo Ticket which includes access to these sites and many others.
