The tour guide was great!

This was an amazing tour and a great chance to see what life was like in ancient Greece! Thank you to our wonderful guide who told us so much about the oracle, Apollo, and more about Greek mythology. I loved seeing ancient Greek sculptures and architecture. It was a very special experience! It was too far from Athens for me and my friends to drive, so this day trip was perfect.

Emilia
I learned a lot about ancient Greece

Delphi was incredible! So much classic Greek architecture and many stories from Greek mythology mixed in. It was great to learn about it with a guide. I definitely recommend visiting the Delphi museum. While you're in Delphi, take the opportunity to see all of it, especially the ruins outside. The tour was well organized, and lunch was delicious. The transportation was comfortable and had AC, which was great because it was very hot outside.

Delphi Tour from Athens

ENTER THE DELPHI ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

Discover the wonders of Delphi on a guided tour from Athens! First, enjoy transportation in a luxury, air-conditioned vehicle with Wi-Fi. Look out at the passing Greek landscapes and the Boeotia plains. Then, get ready for a visit to the Delphi Archaeological Site! Delphi is an ancient Greek town, where the most important temple and oracle of Apollo used to be. The site was very important to ancient Greeks, and today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is located in Phocis, on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. In the ancient world, it was important to the nymphs and Pan.

WHY IS DELPHI FAMOUS?

Besides the most important Temple of Apollo, Delphi is known for the Delphic oracle and for being considered the center of the world. People believed that the oracle delivered prophecies by the god Apollo. The oracle was so highly regarded that it was asked about matters of state. According to ancient sources, vapor rose from the temple floor. In 2001, ethylene gas was discovered in the region. It was used as an anesthetic and can make a person feel like they are in a trance. Delphi was the religious center of ancient Greece in the 6th century BC. The Temple of Apollo that you see today was built in the 4th century BC. How did Delphi come to be known as the center of the world? According to mythology, Zeus released two eagles that met at Delphi. A stone called the omphalos ("navel of the world") was used to mark the place and was found in the Temple of Apollo. At Delphi, you can also see the Athenian Treasury, with a wall covered in hymns to Apollo, featuring musical symbols. You can also see the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, with treasuries and a gymnasium next to it. The biggest building is the theater of Apollo, so you can also see an ancient Greek theater while you are in Delphi!

VISIT THE DELPHI ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

At the museum, you can see golden and ivory statues, like that of Apollo. You can also see a sculpture of the Charioteer, Byzantine mosaics, and a sculpture of a torso of an Amazon. Another treasure of the Delphi Archaeological Museum is the Sphinx of Naxos, which was a guardian of the sanctuary. The Statue of Antinoos is one of multiple statues placed in different cities by Emperor Hadrian. He proclaimed Antinoos a god after his death.

LICENSED GUIDE, FREE TIME & LUNCH OPTION

An expert guide will accompany you on your trip to Delphi, sharing local myths and stories from the site's history. They will tell you more about Greek mythology and the stories of the Greek gods appearing at Delphi. After you visit the archaeological site and museum of Delphi, you can have a 3-course meal at a traditional Greek taverna. Enjoy a leisurely lunch and use the opportunity to try local food! Alternatively, you can enjoy free time to explore.

PRO TIP

The Temple of Apollo is the main highlight, but the best panoramic views of the entire sanctuary actually come from slightly above it, right above the ancient theater. Many visitors rush to the temple, then miss the fact that a 1-minute climb reveals one of the most beautiful views in all of Greece.

The Temple of Apollo was built using beeswax?

According to stories, the first Temple of Apollo was made of laurel tree branches. The second one was built using beeswax and feathers, while the third one was bronze. The fourth temple was made of stone and is probably the only one that actually existed. The temple was destroyed in the 6th century BC. A new one was built, and also destroyed. A new one was built in the 4th century BC, and it is the one you can see when you visit Delphi.
