About the Parthenon Entry Ticket

Visit the extraordinary Parthenon at your own pace and learn more about the history of ancient Greece. Skip-the-line access gives you more time to explore this 2,500-year-old monument. Also, don't miss the opportunity to discover the rest of the Acropolis, including sites like the Erechtheion, the temple of Athena Nike and the Theater of Dionysus.

2,500-YEAR-OLD-HISTORY

Explore the Parthenon, the centerpiece of the Acropolis. Despite earthquakes, explosions and wars, it has continued to stand for 2,500 years. How? Well, the ancient Greeks were master builders and cut stones very precisely.

OPTICAL ILLUSION OF COLUMNS

The columns are actually subtly distorted. They swell in the middle, and the outer ones are wider. This actually creates the illusion that the columns are straight. So, the imperfections are what makes the Parthenon so perfect.

PARTHENON SCULPTURES

The Parthenon is famous for its sculptures. They represent gods and mythical battles between gods and giants, humans and centaurs, as well as the Athenians and the Amazons.

SKIP THE LINE ACCESS & AUDIO GUIDE

Mediterranean countries like Greece have very hot summers. A skip-the-line ticket means you won't have to waste time and risk the hot noon sun. Instead, see everything while it's still cool. Also, we recommend selecting the option with the audio guide to hear all the highlights from the 25 centuries that this magnificent building has stood on the Acropolis.

2,500 YEARS OF GREEK HISTORY

The Parthenon was the biggest and the most lavish temple on the Greek mainland, built at the height of the ancient Greek Empire. It is made out of marble and dedicated to the goddess Athena. There have been earthquakes, fire, wars, explosions and looting. Despite all of this, this ancient building has stood on the Athenian Acropolis for almost 2,500 years and has become one of the symbols of Greece and one of the most recognizable buildings in the world.

NOT ONLY ATHENA'S TEMPLE

The Parthenon wasn't always a place of worship for the Greek goddess. The building served as a Christian Byzantine church when they conquered Greece in the 6th century and made the pagan worship of Greek gods illegal. About 900 years passed before the Ottoman Empire showed up and conquered Athens, turning the Parthenon into a mosque. Today, it is a protected UNESCO World Heritage site and a very popular tourist destination, so book your Parthenon Tickets before they sell out and get ready to be amazed!

EXPLOSION WITHIN THE PARTHENON

Did you know there was even an explosion inside the Parthenon during its long history? The Acropolis was being bombarded by the Venetians fighting the Turks in the 17th century. A powder magazine inside the temple exploded and destroyed its center. The Venetians even smashed a few sculptures while they were trying to steal them.

40-YEAR RESTORATION

Restoring this archaeological site after so many years of neglect and intentional damage was not an easy task. Every piece of marble that could be saved was returned to its original place and gaps were filled with marble from the same quarry that was used to build it. The project lasted for more than 40 years!

Interesting facts about the Parthenon

  • It is estimated that the stones needed to build the Parthenon cost 470 silver talents or around $7 million today.
  • A huge statue of Athena used to be located within the Parthenon. It is known as Athena Parthenos and was about 12 meters high, covered in gold and ivory. The statue was so high that a fully-armed Athena was even depicted with a 2-meter-high goddess Nike in her right hand. So, how do we know what the statue looked like? Well, the Romans liked to reproduce Greek statues, and they made recreations of this one, too.
  • There is another Parthenon in the USA. The ancient temple was recreated in Nashville, Tennessee, as a full-scale replica, including the giant statue of Athena. They even have plaster replicas of the original statues housed in the British Museum in London. The building serves as the city's art museum.
  • People in ancient times actually weren't allowed inside the Parthenon and could only admire it from the outside.
  • A lot of statues and artifacts from the Parthenon can also be found in the UK, in the British Museum in London. This caused a lot of controversy, even back then. The Greek government demanded their return, but the British Museum did not accept, saying they had protected the statues from further damage. The Acropolis Museum represents these sculptures as plaster casts.
