Legacy of the Acropolis in the Acropolis Museum

After defeating the Persian forces, Athens emerged from the war as the leading power of the Greek world. During the 5th century BC, the city entered its Golden Age, a period of increasing prosperity and dominance. This was highlighted by an ambitious rebuilding program at the Acropolis. The man behind this effort was Pericles. He was the most influential Athenian statesman of that era, and the Acropolis was his pet project. By hiring talented stonemasons, craftsmen, and artists, he created an architectural masterpiece that was the envy of the ancient world.

With the passing of the centuries, the monumental complex fell into disrepair, and some of its decorations were ruined. However, archeologists and history enthusiasts were able to uncover and restore many of them. But the question was: where can we safely keep the precious artifacts of the Athens Acropolis? Since the old museum wasn't suitable or large enough, the Greek authorities built a new and spectacular Acropolis Museum. It holds the most valuable surviving pieces of ancient Greek art, such as statues of the Kritios Boy, the Calf-Bearer, the Antenor Kore, the Parthenon South metope, and its world-famous West Frieze!

Thanks to the Acropolis Museum, these priceless works of art continue to be on display for you to see. By booking Acropolis Museum tickets, you have the opportunity to see the legacy of the Athenian Golden Age!
