Unlike anything else on Earth!

If you’ve read Game of Thrones, this place is a real-life Eyrie. They used these big nets to haul up goods and supplies, and we also saw the old ladders to climb the rocks. The stone pillars just don’t look like anything else I’ve ever seen in nature. The thought of monks living up there blows my mind. I normally don’t do day trips, but this Meteora day tour from Athens was super well-organized. We kept to schedule, and the guide Clement was very accommodating. He must have taken ten photos of me in front of the monastery.

Amazing tour guide and experience

One of the best guided tours I’ve been on! Of course, Meteora was breathtaking, but I really appreciate the care our driver and guide gave us. You can tell they’re super passionate about what they do. We stopped at some random places on the road just because they said we’d get amazing photos there. They also recommended what to have for lunch. Plus, Clement was a literal fountain of knowledge about the place. They made our Meteora day trip from Athens truly enjoyable.

DESCRIPTION

Meteora Day Tour from Athens

VIEW METEORA’S BEAUTY

Relax in an air-conditioned bus to Meteora. Upon arrival, there’ll be an optional lunch. Choose between 10 traditional Greek main dishes, paired with a Greek salad. Then your tour of Meteora begins! Drive past breathtaking views of massive rock pillars. The formations almost look like fingers stretching into the sky! Your tour guide will teach you their full history and point out the largest one: Agia, 630 meters high. There’ll be photo stops to snap panoramic pictures of the landscape.

STEP INSIDE METEORA’S MONASTERIES

On top of Meteora’s pillars are 6 Eastern Orthodox monasteries. As your guide will tell you, so high up, the monks were safe from the Greek-Ottoman conflict. Although there used to be 24 monasteries, now only 6 remain. You’ll see each one, and will enter 3 of them! First, visit the Monastery of Great Meteoron. The oldest and largest monastery, it once housed 300 monks. Afterwards, you’ll go to the Monastery of St. Stephanos. This is the newest monastery, founded in the 18th century. In 1961, however, it was converted into a nunnery. Finally, your last stop is the Monastery of Varlaam, the second-largest monastery.

DISCOVER THE HERMIT CAVES

This Meteora Day Trip from Athens also includes visiting the Hermit Caves. Hermit monks used to live in these caves over two hundred years ago! The caves are very high up, carved into the Badovas rock. While visiting, you’ll see the old scaffolding and ladders used to reach the caves. The Hermit Caves actually house all three types of Greek Orthodox Church monasticism. They represent all three forms of Eastern Orthodox monasticism: eremitic (solitary), cenobitic (communal), and sketic (semi-communal).

RETURN TO ATHENS

Lean back in the comfortable bus and rest your legs. As you return to Athens, look outside at the relaxing Greek countryside and recall all the sights you saw.

PRO TIP

Bring a neck pillow and download offline music or podcasts in advance to make the 4-hour drive each way more comfortable. Wi-Fi is also available on the bus, but having offline entertainment ensures a smooth and uninterrupted ride once you leave Athens.

Do you know how the Meteora rock formations happened?

There are two explanations: geological and mythological.

Geologically, Meteora is made of sandstone and conglomerate. The main theory is that there used to be a lake. The conglomerate formed as mud, sand, and stone flowed into a delta at the lake’s edge. Then, earthquakes pushed the seabed up and created a high plateau, with vertical fault lines in the sandstone. The pillars were formed by water, wind, and temperature weathering the vertical faults.

Mythologically, Zeus enlisted the Hecatonchires in his war against his father Cronus. The Hecatonchires were enormous giants, with one hundred hands and fifty heads. Apparently, the Meteora are the remains of the massive rocks the Hecatonchires threw in battle.
