My first bike tour, but not my last!

The Athens Bike Tour was my first bike tour, and I loved it! We saw so many attractions in so little time. It would have taken the entire day to see all these sights if we had stuck to walking or public transportation. On bikes, it was literally 2 and a half hours! My favorites were the Thissio neighborhood and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, although I honestly enjoyed all the stops. I’ll definitely do another bike tour!

The tour guide was knowledgeable and very helpful

Our tour guide Ellie led us through the entire Athens, often making stops where we would all hop off and she would talk about the site we were at. She’d also explain where we were going next, which was super helpful. When she was describing where we’d go next, she’d often throw in fun anecdotes from her life in Athens, and I loved that personal touch!

DESCRIPTION

The Ultimate Athens Bike Tour

Begin the Athens Bike Tour by meeting your guide near the Acropolis metro station. They’ll host a quick safety briefing and then help everyone get set up on their e-bikes. You’ll also receive a helmet. Once everyone is ready, your guide will start biking first, leading the way. Follow them and explore Athens like a local!

VISIT THE MORE TRADITIONAL SIDE OF ATHENS

As your guide leads you through the city, you’ll see several gorgeous sites. The first is the National Observatory of Athens and its signature, perfectly spherical dome. Make sure to snap a picture or two! After that, you’ll visit the traditional neighborhood of Thission, famous for its many pedestrian streets, cafes, synagogues, and churches. Right next door is the ancient cemetery Kerameikos, which was used as far back as 3,000 BC. The next stop of the Athens Bike Tour will be the remains of the Ancient Greek Agora and the Roman Agora. Both sites were once the beating heart of ancient Athens, and you’ll see plenty of interesting ruins.

TAKE A BREAK BY THE ATHENS CITY CATHEDRAL

After all that cycling and exploring, it’s time for a short break. Your guide will lead you to the Athens City Cathedral - there’s plenty of shade there, making it the perfect place to relax. Sit down, rest, and drink some water or eat a snack. While you’re resting, admire the beauty of the cathedral. Marble from 72 demolished churches was used to build the cathedral's immense walls.

SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MODERN & ANCIENT SITES

After your break, your tour guide will take you to the Plaka neighborhood - the oldest section of Athens and the perfect place for souvenirs. You’ll also see amazing views of the Acropolis from here. Next, ride on to the Presidential Mansion - the official residence of Greece’s president. You’ll also see the ceremonial change of the guards, which offers a popular, fun spectacle. Continue to the Zappeion Hall, a modern landmark used for meetings and ceremonies, and glimpse the Panathenaic stadium - the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Finally, finish your tour by Hadrian’s Arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, one of the largest temples in the ancient world.

Athens is making their city more bike-friendly. How?

Athens has recently begun a “Cycling through History and Art” program, which is dedicated to making the city as bike-friendly as possible. The city has begun installing secure bicycle parking spaces at all major cultural centers (museums, galleries, etc.). You’ll probably spot a few of them on your Athens Bike Tour and perhaps even get to use them!

Through this initiative, the city hopes to encourage biking and promote more environmentally friendly and sustainable ways of transportation.
